WSREP was created and grew out of a desire to create a home for artists. The Original Advisory Board included Elyse Roberts, Christopher Coppola, Francis Ford Coppola, JT Rogers, Lee Blessing, Tom Kaiser, Dave White, James Lipton, Lin Manuel Miranda, Arthur Penn, Alicia Regan, Avram Ludwig, Estelle Parsons, Melody Cooper, Gus Reyes and so many more.
The first Readings were by JT Rogers, and Bash Doran and raised the original $3,000 + seed money to pursue future endeavors. The Company was born and over the next year attendance at staged readings crept to over 1,200 patrons.
In 2010, Williams Street Repertory (WSRep) was formed with generous support from the MacArthur Foundation and co-produced Russian playwright Yury Klavdiev’s I AM THE MACHINE GUNNER translated by John Freedman, with the Generous Company, the Center for International Theater, and Towson University
In 2011, WSR mounted its first complete season. The season was met with much praise from audiences and critics alike and led to WSRep expanding their line-up from four shows to six for their 2012/2013 Season.
In March 2016, WSRep entered into a contract with Actor’s Equity Association, making WSRep the only professional theatre in McHenry County.
In October 2016, WSRep joined TCG (Theatre Communications Group) garnering national visibility as a regional theater.
Since its inception, WSRep has produced more than 60 full-length plays including Regional and World premieres.
Raue Center For The Arts and Williams Street Repertory are 501(c)3 non-profit organizations dedicated to enriching the lives of all through the arts.
