With equal measures of pluck and positivity, little orphan Annie charms everyone’s hearts despite a next-to-nothing start in 1930s New York City. Annie is determined to find the parents who abandoned her years ago on the doorstep of an orphanage run by the cruel Miss Hannigan. Annie eventually foils Miss Hannigan’s evil machinations, finding a new home and family in billionaire Oliver Warbucks, his personal secretary, Grace Farrell, and a lovable mutt named Sandy.

Maybe is from the stage version of Annie Jr.  is a pivotal moment in the story, signifying Annie’s internal struggle as she faces the potential of leaving her newfound family with Warbucks to return to her biological parents. Martin Charnin (lyrics) once revealed that “Maybe” was originally conceived as the second number in the musical after “It’s the Hard Knock Life,” but he and Charles Strouse (music) ultimately reversed that order after they realized that “the most important thing about getting this show going was for us, the audience, to know what Annie’s problem was.”
